    RIP Simon

    Terribly sad to hear the news about Simon. Had the pleasure of briefly meeting both Simon and Todd at the MC Expos before they headed off. Their resolve to do this - with little support - was amazing and inspiring. Simon had a real classic laconic Aussie "get the job done" attitude! No ego, no bullshit, no showmanship, just a determination to bring awareness to prostate cancer and men's health issues in a way I'm sure a lot of blokes would appreciate and identify with. Great stuff.
    It was a real shock to hear about Simon's passing, especially so close to the end of the ride. I'd been receiving the email updates, and Simon's descriptions of their adventures were a real insight into something few of us riders will ever experience in our lifetimes.
    Looking at the posts already here, both the guys made a real impression - and a lot of friends - on their journey.
    My condolences - and those of the crew at JUST BIKES - go to Simon's family and friends.

    Hey Todd (Nevile)

    it's been just over a week since i took you on to BA Argentina on QF 17 from Sydney. I was the flt attendant looking after you and your mate going to arrange for Simon's return. Well now i'm in LA and just got around to looking at this website you wrote down for me...good job too because i just donated $100 towards your expenses. while i have not gone through it with a fine toothcombe just looking at your 'planning' link shows that you have gone through this throughly. in fact im surprised you didn't give up on the idea it looks so daunting. Obviously the experiences that you and Simon gained from your childhood and previous work choices have stood you in good stead for such a journey.....the significance of such growth experiences usually aren't recognized as we pass through them on our journey of life, it is only the twists and turns of fate or of choice that we then realize how important our past has been to dealing with the presant....... i can see this as i read through the profiles of you and Simon. i think your attitude to the issues of Prostrate cancer are commendable. each time i get on my motor scooter in the future i will spare a thought for the journey you and Simon undertook and gladly pass on your web address to my collegues at Qantas in the hope that they too will support you. in hindsight and since reading your profile and the limited contact i had with you and your friend on this sector it is clear to me that in this short time you were able to get my attention and communicate without the self intrest that we sometimes confront to the detriment of other passengers. i'd say you are a good ambassador and good luck with this cause.

    What a legacy!

    Dear Simon,

    I first learned about you last spring from a great friend of mine named Karen. She shared photos and stories of your adventure around East Timor and was so excited about this great man with a huge heart and larger-than-life personality.
    We were so lucky to actually meet you and Todd last November when you stayed with us at our home in Toronto. It was such a privilege to be welcomed into your life as friends, and so wonderful to see how happy you and Karen were to have found each other.

    There are no words to express how sad this all is, or how unfair, or how tragic. There are no words. But I am certain that there are so many people all over this world who are all the better for having crossed paths with you. The messages on this site demonstrate what a great guy you were, and how quickly you left such a lasting impression in all the places you traveled.

    Thank you for having the courage and determination to make this incredible round the world journey. We will all do our bit to make sure your foundation carries on your great legacy.

    already missed

    i met simon when he drove up on me repairing my bike out in front of my hostel in medallin, colombia. we compared bikes, all the mods and stickers and damage done through months of riding, and immediately i liked him. a tall bloke with a cheerful smile. he had a way of appealing to all people, despite cultural differences and language barriers, he was the perfect person to raise awareness for prostate cancer, he was truely a genuine guy. We rode together for 10 days. i remember one day we drove to see a huge castle together on the colombia-equador border, he was ahead of me and arrived to the mirador several minutes before me. when i rolled up he had a group of kids circling him, he picked one up and set him on his bike. before we left there was a group of 20 or more, previous strangers, surrounding him, all laughing, while i took their picture. people loved his light, and how he did shine brightly!

    i know the love and friendships we shared with Simon is invulnerable to the changing seasons ahead. i will always remember simon with a thread of joy, someone who´s life was knit next to my own, even if for a short while. Simon was a good friend, and a good rider, in my heart i know we will see him again, and in that moment God will help us understand what is not now meant for us to know.

    An Everlasting Memory

    Simon touched a lot of hearts and mine. From knowing him for a few short years through volunteering he has left a lasting impression, what a great man and friend. I remember Simon saying how much he enjoyed sitting in the old armchair I gave him. My sincere condolences and love to his family whom he spoke so lovingly about.

    Yesterday

    It was just yesterday, or so it seems, that I met Simon and Todd in New Jersey. I dropped off supplies, donuts, a box of coffee (which amused Simon greatly) and took some pictures of the blokes. How I envied their adventure. Simon and Todd are first class citizens of the world. Simon's departure will leave all our lives a little less fulfilled.
    I will miss him.

    die Nachricht, dass Simon auf tragische Weise zu seiner letzten Reise in die Unendlichkeit aufgebrochen ist, hat uns tief erschüttert. Es ist schwer, die passenden und tröstenden Worte zu finden, denn über den schmerzlichen Verlust kann nichts hinwegtrösten. Nichts kann Euch in dieser Zeit den Schmerz aus Eurem Herzen nehmen, aber wir möchten Euch wissen lassen, das wir in Gedanken bei Euch sind.
    "Einen Vorsprung im Leben hat, wer da anpackt, wo andere erst einmal reden" - und das hat Simon getan. Nun sind es diese Taten und die Erinnerungen an einen tollen Menschen, die ihn in unserem Herzen weiter leben lassen.

    RIP Simon

    I met Simon only 2 weeks ago when i was riding out of Bolivia, we were going in different directions but when i stopped to look around he had done the same.
    We chatted at the side of the road about how our bikes were going (we were both on KLR´s), how chocolate was now a staple food group (as we both munched on sublime choc bars) and about the joys and pains of travelling.
    He was on top form and extremely happy that I could guard his bike as he´d been waiting hours for a "call of nature"..
    I said to him i´d love to chat about travelling the world to which he answered "I´m not the right bloke for that, I´ve had my fill. I´m ready to settle down now". That is what makes it so sad, he was so close to finishing before this tragic accident.
    I´m 33, riding a KLR through S.A and yesterday my frame completely broke in half with no warning whilst i was riding it.
    Accidents do happen, I can only hope that he´d had a great days riding and it just suddenly ended without him knowing a thing.
    My thoughts are with his family.

    I worked with Moose in 2004 as we were both on the Topdeck Training Trip in Europe. We then did a trip together straight after. A great guy, big heart and loads of fun. Will be sorely missed. RIP Moose.

    Farewell to a great bloke

    I'm deeply shocked and saddened to hear the news of the passing of Simon.
    Simon was my colleague and mentor in the Tourism department at the City of Melbourne.
    I was there to see him off at Transport bar in Melbourne last year and have been following his journey via the website since.

    His friendly personality, adenturous spirit and amazing dedication were a great inspiration to me; I feel like a better person for having known him.
    My most sincere condolences to all those who have had the pleasure of knowing him.

    A few days have passed big fella, and lots of photo's of you boys pulled out and memories recalled. It sits no easier today & not sure when it will, but I know for sure it won't all be in vain as tragic and painful it feels right now. You touched our lives for a reason and gave us so much, time for us for you now Moose. I read the message again today you sent when you learn't the full extent of bundy's accident.     Inspiring!

    I got the pleasure of spending a few days laughing and discussing his trip. His family, new found love, his carer and his last push to Tierra del Fuego. He inspired me.     Simon ist als Held gegangen,er hat für etwas gekämpft und dafür sein Leben riskiert.

    A Wonderful Man

    We were lucky enough to meet Simon in Melbourne just before he and Todd set off on their trip, and we are devastated to hear of Simon's accident. We do find comfort however in reading on this site of the adventures and friendships he discovered in his 12 months of travel, and what a wonderful trip he had. Condolences to Simons family, especially to you Mark, please continue his legacy, I know you will have lots of support.

    Wish this wasn't true.....

    No-one can put into words the pain that those left behind will now be feeling. However, when people leave us, we have nothing else but memories to rely on. You Simon, have given your family so many memories and moments of love and achievement, that you will forever help them to feel proud and special to have had you in their lives.

    Andrea and I met whilst we were travelling round NZ, and she lived with me for period whilst she was in the UK - I know that she adored you and that you were her inspriation to see the world. You must be so proud of her, as I know she was of you.

    Keep riding up there in Heaven and look down on the impact your wonderful ambition has had on the world.

    A hugh loss for EVERYONE!

    Hi All,
    This is Mark Buckley, Simon's brother, It pains me beyond believe to have to write this message, but the passing of SIMON PAUL BUCKLEY, 32 in Argentina in the passed couple of days is one of the most tradegic events in my life, and will take a lifetime to recover from, but i refuse to allow such an incident to be mourned forever.

    So, I NEED YOUR HELP!!
    I will be setting up the SIMON BUCKLEY FOUNDATION. I want to continue what Simon started, i need HELP is all aspects of setup and development of the foundation.

    We here in Canada who had the pleasure of meeting Todd & Simon are stunned by the news of the accident.     Such sad news

    I know Simon won't read this but I hope his family and friends will. I'm a Melbourne vollie that Simon trained. He is and always will be one of the nicest most genuine people I have ever met. He has a heart as big of the world and a spirit that should inspire all of us to get off our bums and dosomething!
    I will always think of Simon in the present not the past as he will keep inspiring me to reach for the future.

    A través del diario local, me enteré de la tragica noticia, siendo fanaticos de las motos, tuvo impacto en mi, sobre todo de las personas que viajan a distintos rumbos con su motocicleta, pero solo el día de hoy me enteré a través del mismo diario local **www**, de Punta Arenas Chile, que lo que Simon era más que un viaje de placer, era luchar por algo , por muchas personas, en contra del cancer de prostata. Ruego a Dios por su descanso, estoy seguro que lo tendrá a su lado, como una buena persona que siemopre quiso ayudar por una buena causa, a su manera, Q.E.P.D Simon.

    A tragic accident near to Ushuaia

    It´s very sad what has happened, but I think that you must be able and pray for this great person.-
    Simón 32-year-old Paul Bukley died tragically on having overturned with his motorcycle Kawasaki 650 KLR when he was passing along the routes of Tierra del Fuego. It happened in hours of the evening of this Wednesday (10th March)when a family it was found in the zone of the river By Ewan Norte shot to the side of the way already without life. Everything makes predict that it was a question of a mournful accident since there were no tracks of which the tourist had hit minutes before his death.
    The good people die and the villains continue living?
    Some time we ask why happened to a man with an immense heart.
    The motorcyclist died last 10th March in Tierra del Fuego realized a solidary crusade. God Bless you Simon

    As an local in Ushuaia i want to inform everyone following Simon challenger a very bad news, just last wednesday afternoon Simon has die in an accident on panamerican route N°3, i feel like i have to make this note after i read how many of you are supporting Simon during all his trip.
    i send my most sincere condolences to his friends and relatives, here in Ushuaia we receive hundres of bikers from all over the world, and when their is anyone involve in an accident we try to help and support.

    i am so sorry to hear about this terrible accident!
    i had the honour of meeting the boys at the Sydne motorcycle show last year and was truley touched by their enthusiasm and excitement at their up coming journey and fund raising.

    I was reading the news from my hometown Rio Grande, Tierra del Fuego, Argentina and there was an article about an Aussie motorbiker who was riding around the world for a good cause. Unfortunately, as he was heading towards Ushuaia, he had a tragic accident and died. It is really very sad and if his blog readers just happened to learn this, I am really sorry to have nformed you about his sudden death. May God bless him and keep him in peace. Let's pray for his family who are undergoing a difficult time.

    Lamentable la tragedia por el fallecimiento de Simon Paul Bukley ocurrido a 60 km al sur de mi ciudad. El noble esfuerzo de éste jóven muchacho quedará en nuestra memoria y en la de cada ser de cada país que lo ha visto pasar. El recuerdo permanecerá inalterable a través de su obra y de las imágenes que ha retratado a lo largo de su maravillosa travesía. Mis condolencias para familiares y amigos de Simon.     yo man, i've slowed dramatically since we seperated in otavala. but i'm doing well, still in equador. in banos now, but planning on going to cuenca soon cause i heard there's rock climbing to be had there. i wanted to look you up, because i have a bike question. what was the problem when your speedo and mileage tracker stopped working... because you've guessed it... mine just stopped too! i thin it has to be related to the fact i just changed tires, and when they got swapped they dudes really lubed everything up, so it leads me to believe something is just not catching. let me know what's the crack, and where you are, and if you've made it to bolivia, i hear it's been flooded there.

    Hey guys, just had a look at your page for the first time since we met in Adelaide river. What you've been doing is absolutley amazing.
    I was the chick driving round Oz in my corolla and swag.
    Unfortunately a crazy lady put a stop to all that a month ago in Perth when she pulled out in front of me and I t-barred her station wagon. Bye bye corolla. Ah well, to bigger and better things! Off to the uk in a few months to collect some coin and back to Australia for a 4x4.

    Great thing your doing guys!!!
    We rode to Ushaia from the west coast of US. We kept a pretty good blog with info on roads, places to stay, bike shops and stuff we saw. All organized by countries. We did the ride this year so the info on roads is pretty accurate. on our spot page you can see how far we went some days and the real mileage between towns or gas. There is some info on borders and stuff too. Also some info on a place in Agentina the helped with shipping bikes.
    Anything I can do from here I stand ready. Feel free to email me with any questions you think I can help with.
    I also have the Garmin Zumo GPS file I can email you if you want.

    plucked up courage for a DRE thanks largely to your dedication to the cause

    Having some stranger put their finger inside you is not my idea of fun. I had been putting a digital rectal exam of for years, but while enlisting to work for a mining company I found myself back in a doctor's surgery and my mind wandered between the hearing test and the chest exam. I thought of Moose riding around the world to raise awareness for prostate cancer. So I said to the doc "do you mind if I make an appointment to get a DRE?" He just smiled, asked if there was a family history, put on some gloves and told me to lie on my side. It was all over pretty quickly and it was not as horrible as I thought it would be. Suffice to say that the peace of mind is better than the sensation in the surgery. The best thing to do with cancer is to catch it early - I'm glad I got the test done - and frankly, I might still have that on my to do list had I not thought of a couple of guys riding around this planet to raise funds for research.

    What are ya doin resting in Bali???????? 2 days with no sleep is nothing to you two! You are already a week behind. You have to be back in time for the Blue Ribbon Ride in NSW in 2010. People are already contacting us to see if you will be around for their events. So throw a leg (on the bike) twist that throttle and suck up the miles.     G'day Blokes,

    Thanks for the e-mail, I have offen thought when you two would set off, and it's good to here you are finally about to do so, I wish you all the best and I'm happy to relay my support to you both, I would love to be there to see you off...But, last Saturday 28Th my son (Craig,25) payed me a visit, which is always a great treat as he is in the Navy and I don't get to see him all that offen, but he came out with news that was to shatter my day,he told me that he had found a lump on his right testicle, which has had removed and to find out that is cancer! he is starting cemo this week, the only good news to come from it is that they got to it early and should make a full recovery, so every day I keep my hopes up that he does, as I had prostate cancer in 2007, which was treated by Dr.P.Stricker,and made a full recovery myself, so I know how he is feeling, it scared the shit out me and made me take a better look at life and to realise just how quick our lives can change!

    So once again fellers, good luck and have a great trip.

    Precision Honda - Darwin

    Simon,
    I met you ANZAC day at Adelaide Rvr,
    Since meeting you and talking about your soon to be adventure, I have been extremely jealous. I was a rider, both trail and road bikes, in December 2003 I was involved in a T-bone when a old lady pulled out in front of me whilst I was doing 100km/hr down the Stuart Hwy. I have recovered reasonably well now after various injuries, but despite many years of wanting to hop back on a bike again, I have not. I have recently been watching a Ducati for sale in the paper, and you may have been the convincing I need. The adrenaline and happiness from riding may soon return to my body!

    I too am an avid traveller, and have done some of Europe, UAE, Singapore, Vietnam, and spent 1yr in East Timor. So I another reason for me to be jealous! I wish you both the best of luck, and will keep you page closely monitored to satisfy my jealousy for now.

    If you want to catch up for a beer before leaving Darwin, give me a call.

    Hi Guys, What a selfless act...maybe not, but an great excuse to spend your days riding. My husband who has just had his prostate removed is a Triumph Daytona fan. I'm researching prostate cancer for my opinion/editorial article for Journalism.     close to my heart

    Hi Simon, as you know the purpose of your trip is very close to my heart. My dad was diagnosed a fair few years ago now and thanks to people like you - raising awareness and money - he's still alive (and kicking!). Over the years he's been part of various trials with his local cancer research unit and he's lived a full, happy and active life for most of the time but recently he found out that his current treatment is ceasing to work. We're hoping to get him on another trial to keep it at bay, but all research and trials need funding.

    I just want to say a huge thanks to you and Todd because without people like you going out and talking about prostate cancer, and raising money to fund the research to treat it, I know my dad wouldn't be around today.

    Loads of luck with the trip - I'm sure it will be a huge success! Looking forward to catching up when you're over here xxx

I did a east to west crossing of aust on yamaha raptor quads in late 05 and raised funds for variety disabled kids along the way. so best of luck with your event and we did a pass around the office to help out the cause.
